Death as a Great Transition and an Ally:
understanding death, dying and beyond from a shamanic perspective
26-28 September, 2014
(currently with wait list)
Chalet Ganesha, Champéry, Residential Retreat
led by Jacqueline Teoh
In our modern society and culture, death is something dark, mysterious, and fearful. Some people even consider death as a failure. Ancient cultures however, did not regard death as an enemy, but viewed it as a great transition and dared to make it an ally, in order to live their lives more fully and help others move beyond fear and approach the last stages of life as an opportunity for new growth and learning.
One of the most important traditional tasks of the seer, shaman, medicine man or woman is to assist people who are either dying or the spirits of those who have died to make the transition into great domain of consciousness. This body of practices is known as Psychopomp, from the Greek word psychopompos which literally means "conductor of souls". In Greek mythology, the god Hermes served as the escort for the dead into the afterlife. This concept of a guide or intermediary between the living and the dead is a collective theme found in most religions and mythologies.
In this high-energy and challenging workshop, we will use the method of shamanic journeying, dreaming, ceremonies and compassionate communication with the departed, to deepen our personal understanding of death and rebirth. The work include (but not limited to):
- Journeying to the departed for helpful and loving communication
- The shaman's death, how to face our own death, understanding what it is, what needs to be done before we make the transition
- Developing a personal geography of the afterlife
- Death preparation work to help the dying and how to work in a culturally neutral way (that matches the spiritual belief system of the dying person)
- Helping the departed on their spiritual journeys - Psychopomping
- Going beyond our personal death to enter the mysteries of death and rebirth, bringing greater courage and clarity to the issues of daily life.
